Classic Lotto 47

Favored for its instant win add-on called EZmatch, Lotto 47, is one of the most popular in-house draw games offered by the state-run Michigan Lottery. They added lotto 47 to Michigan Lottery’s games menu on May 15, 2005, as a substitution to Winfall, a somewhat failed game which was phased out because of a grave loophole and a decline in ticket sales.

You may ask why name the game “Lotto 47”? Well, from a design viewpoint, I think the name was derived from the game type, which it is a lottery game, henceforth the emblem “lotto” and “47” for two reasons, first, the overall odds of winning a prize in this game are 1 in 47 and second, there are 47 numbers to play, hence LOTTO 47.

Lotto 47 draws are held twice, on a weekly basis - every Wednesday and Saturday at 7.29 pm Eastern Time. The winning numbers are drawn by a computerised random number generator, with jackpots starting at $1 million. The odds of winning the jackpot are at an approximated low of 1 in eleven million. But then again, the overall chances of winning any prize are high at 1 in 47 – very favourable odds of winning a prize.

Bettors who match six correct numbers win the jackpot, which is the biggest prize guaranteed to be at least one million dollars, often higher. If no bettor wins the jackpot, the prize rolls over to the next draw. If there is no winning ticket on the next draw as well, it rolls over again and continues to do so until somebody eventually matches all the numbers. If the jackpot is won, the jackpot starts at $1 million in the next drawing. However, if a player predicts only five, four, or three, of the six winning numbers, they win lesser amounts as portrayed by the winnings prize chart below:

6 of 61: 10,737,573Jackpot (one million Guaranteed)
5 of 61: 43,649$2,500 (Guaranteed)
4 of 61: 873$100 (Guaranteed)
3 of 61: 50$5 (Guaranteed)

Anyone who matches all six numbers wins the jackpot. Players matching three, four and five numbers also win as indicated in the chart above.

You've got to be in it to win it, so here is how to play Lotto 47

To stand a chance of winning the above-mentioned prizes including the progressive jackpot, which starts at a guaranteed $1 million, players must pick six numbers from 1 to 47 numbers and hope for the best that their selection matches the winning numbers.

Tickets can be bought for just $1 per wager either online or offline at any of the 11,000 authorised Michigan Lottery retail stores, with an option to choose own numbers or use the easy pick function, whereby numbers will be picked randomly by the computer. Lotto 47 ticket sales close at 7:08 pm ET on draw nights, re-opening online at 7:09 pm ET and the following day offline.

In September 2016, the Doubler Days promotion was held for Lotto 47 for the first time. The message “Doubler” was printed randomly on Lotto 47 tickets purchased during the promotion period. Tickets with this doubler message won double on non-jackpot prizes.

To increase the likliyhood of winning, players can choose to add EZmatch play, which has a 1 in 5 odds of winning, to a Lotto 47 wager for an additional $1. If opted, six EZmatch numbers will print on the player’s ticket below the Lotto 47 numbers. If any of the EZmatch numbers match any one or more of the players Lotto 47 numbers, the player instantly wins the prize amount printed next to the matching EZmatch number.

All Michigan Lottery prizes are subject to local, state and federal income taxes. However, for prizes of up to $600, the lottery doesn’t withhold any taxes.
