FY 2019 - a bumper year for Michigan

It’s the beginning of the calendar year – the perfect time to reflect on FY 2019. It’s often said, about 97 cents of every dollar spent on a Michigan lottery product will one way or another, return to serve the Michigan community.

Generally, this is in the form of Mi Lottery’s contributions to the School Aid Fund to support public education, prizes to players and commissions payments to local lottery vendors and retailers.

For each dollar spent on a Michigan lottery ticket in FY 2019, approximately

  • 61 cents went to players as prizes.
  • 27 cents went to a worthy cause – the School Aid Fund. To support public education.
  • 9 cents paid commissions for vendors and retailers. Many of which are small family-owned businesses.
  • 3 cents funded the Lottery’s daily operations and administrative costs.

Under Michigan state law, all returns from Mi Lotto should be donated to the School Aid Fund.

So, in FY 2019 the Michigan Lottery raised more than $1.07 billion to that cause. That is an increase of nearly $129 million over the preceding year’s contribution.

As a result, this marks the largest one-year increase contribution in Mi Lottery’s 47-year history. This is also the first time the Lottery has reached the $1 billion mark in support of public education in a single year.

Still, Michigan Lottery players also enjoyed a bumper year. Players won more than $2.36 billion in cash prizes in FY 2019. On the other hand, Michigan Lottery’s retail partners and vendors enjoyed more than $266.5 million in commissions from selling winning tickets.

FY 2019 was also Michigan Lottery’s 5th straight record-setting year contribution to the school aid fund. That is an increase of nearly $327 million, or 44%, since FY 2014, just before the streak began.

Mi Lotteries contributions over the preceding five years

  • FY18: $941.3 million
  • FY17: $924.1 million
  • FY16: $888.9 million
  • FY15: $795.5 million
  • FY14: $742.9 million

Since 1972, the Lottery has generated more than $23.4 billion for public education in Michigan.
