An Oakland County lottery club made history after they claimed the largest prize from the Michigan Lottery. This was the recent $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot just a few months ago.
The four-member Wolverine FLL Club’s winning ticket happened to match all of the numbers that were drawn on January 22. The winning numbers were 04-26-42-50-60 – and the Mega Ball of 24.
They purchased their winning ticket at a Kroger located at 47650 Grand River Avenue in Novi. One of the club members had remembered to purchase a ticket after seeing a sign that read $1 billion and thus decided to purchase one inside.
Paying it Forward
The club has stated that the money will be used for the families of the club and generations to come. In addition, they also plan to continue their charitable donations throughout southeast Michigan.
Kroger also received a $50,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Once they received their bonus, they immediately gave it all to the Food Bank Council of Michigan.
Impressive Sales Numbers
Sales from the record-setting jackpot that began in September helped jumpstart the Lottery’s 2021 fiscal year. Looking at the fiscal year in October up to the end of the jackpot run, Mega Millions sales alone were up roughly 110 percent as compared to the same period for 2020.
Having a record-setting jackpot of this magnitude helps the state of Michigan all the way around. Lottery sales help support public education and roughly 10,000 different retail locations throughout the state.
History Has Been Made
The $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot is by far the largest prize ever won in the state of Michigan, but it is also the third-largest prize ever won in the United States. Looking at the national and world records for a lottery jackpot, there has been a top prize of $1.586 billion.
That was the Powerball jackpot that was won on January 13, 2016, which was split three ways with winning tickets from California, Florida, and Tennessee. The second-largest ever recorded prize was a $1.537 billion jackpot that was won on October 23, 2018, by a person in South Carolina.
For Michigan, the last largest Lottery prize ever won was a $337 million Powerball jackpot. This prize was won way back on August 15, 2012.
