This ends months of residents speculation on why the winner hadn’t stepped forward. The winner had until April 19, 2019, to claim the prize.
As allowed by South Carolina law, the sole winner chooses to remain anonymous. The winner reserved Jason Kurland of Rivkin Radler of New York to provide legal representation and to act as spokesperson.
However, after the payment process is complete, a news conference will be scheduled in Columbia, South Carolina.
Because the winner chose the lump sum payment option, he or she will, thus only take home a one-time cash payment of $877,784,124. This is the largest jackpot payout to a single winner in United States lottery history. However, the opportunity cost guarantees the full prize amount of $1.537 billion stretched over thirty annual progressive payments.
The winning ticket was purchased between 20 and 23 October 2018 at the KC Mart, in Simpsonville, South Carolina. The shop, KC Mart, will receive $50,000 in commission for selling the winning ticket. However, the state of South Carolina will benefit to the value of $61 million in income taxes from the winner.
